The availability of pure, naturally chalk-filtered water is one of the key advantages of locating The Norfolk Brewhouse at the family farm.
The farm, in Hindringham, has land which clay sitting on a rich seam of chalk.
Many of Britain’s best breweries have done rather well (no pun intended) out of using chalk-filtered water. Indeed Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewery, crafts its beers using chalk-filtered water.
Time to employ the services of a local, and respected company, T W Page, to tap into our water supply. A chirpy chap, called Stephen Howes, was in charge of drilling.
Down the piling went….and down, and down, and down – to about 190 ft before crystal-clear and very cold water flowed up from the underground source. Not only was it fantastically clear it was also very cold – a feature which will allow us to cool down the wort after boiling – saving a significant amount of water and energy.
This chalk-filtered water is the starting point of all of Norfolk Brewhouse’s real ales and lagers. Norfolk ale, hand-crafted using Norfolk water, now that can’t be bad now can it?
